WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Crowley's Ridge College traveled to Walnut Ridge, Ark. on a frigid Tuesday afternoon and dropped their first game of the season to the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles 5-3.
The teams had nearly identical score lines until late in the contest. Both teams were held hitless by Crowley's Ridge's (4-1) Jack Roney and WBU's Brennan White until the third inning. Kole Simms recorded the first hit in the contest by attempting a sacrifice bunt to move Zorey Chipman and Zach Duty into scoring position; however, the freshman's speed saw him record an infield single. Nate Finney would drive in the first run of the game with a single to right field, plating Chipman.
Williams Baptist (1-0) started the home half of the third inning with a leadoff double from Palmer Campbell. After a sacrifice fly, Campbell came around to tie to game off of Nick Allred's single. The Eagles would follow up in the fifth inning after a leadoff double converted to a run, giving WBU a 2-1 lead.
The bottom of the sixth inning started well with two quick outs but later proved to be fatal for the Pioneers when Trent Pobst muscled a three-run homer over the centerfield fence to dig the Pioneer deficit to 5-1.
The Pioneers would chip away at the lead by plating a run in both the eighth and ninth innings thanks to Chipper Lamb's sac fly scoring Duty in the eighth and Jackson Imler taking advantage of an Eagle error then coming around to score. Unfortunately for the men in green, the big sixth inning kept the game out of reach with WBU recording the final out for a 5-3 lead.
Roney had five strikeouts in the game while only allowing one earned run.
Finney led the Pioneer bats with two hits and two runs batted in. Simms and Phoenix Beal were the other three Pioneer hits.
