Pioneer Baseball (7-33 & 6-20 AMC) dropped both contests against the Owls of William Woods University (28-16 & 20-12) in this afternoon's Senior Day doubleheader at Pioneer Park.
Game 3
Crowley's Ridge- 7
William Woods- 8
Paragould, Ark.- The Pioneers narrowly missed out on a game three win for the seven recognized seniors, with the Owls outlasting the Pioneers by one run. CRC went to work early in the game, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first with Adonis Thomas and Clay Burgess bringing in one run apiece and freshman Alex Gamez smashing his first collegiate homer to left center, which scored two. CRC held the four-run advantage until the Owls wore down Pioneer starter Jack Roney and rallied back with a 3-run fourth inning. Junior Clay Burgess came through again for CRC in the bottom half of the fourth, stacking up another RBI with a double to left, but painfully the Owls answered with a 5-run lead-altering fifth inning. The Pioneers challenged the Owls in the sixth, pushing two final runs to the plate with Burgess and Gamez collecting their third RBIs of the game with singles to right field, but woefully, the Owls stumped CRC in the final frame, holding on to their lead, taking the nailbiter contest. As a team, the Pioneers outpaced the Owls from the box, collecting 12 base hits in the game. Regrettably, CRC struggled to find the timely hit as they left 10 runners stranded on the base path. Alex Gamez and Clay Burgess led the team with 2 for 4 and 3 RBI efforts. Parker Gordon, James Wilson, and Adonis Thomas each added two hits in the contest. Jack Roney took the loss, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) off 7 hits while walking 3 in 4.1 innings. Senior Michael Sharp Jr. relieved Roney, tossing 2.2 innings where the Osceola, Arkansas native allowed no runs, no walks, and 1 hit in his outing.
Game 4
Crowley's Ridge- 1
William Woods-7
Paragould, Ark.- In the series finale, the Owls would edge the Pioneers 2-1 through 5 innings before putting away the contest with a 4-run sixth inning. Just like in game three, CRC struck first blood with sophomore Rilyn Coleman drawing the bases loaded walk to score Parker Gordon in the bottom of the first, but sadly Gordon would be the only Pioneer to reach the plate with the WWU pitching staff shutting out CRC over the next 6 innings. WWU reclaimed the lead from CRC at the top of the third before placing it out of reach in the sixth, spoiling Senior Day. The Pioneers were limited to two hits, seniors Matthew Parker and JackHenry Glasgow each singled in the contest. Chance Arender took the loss, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned off 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1.
Up Next: The Pioneers see a few days rest before they hit the road in their final road series against Columbia College next Friday and Saturday. #GOPIONEERS
