TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After having several games either postponed or outright canceled due to winter weather, Crowley's Ridge softball hit the diamond for the first time since March 4. The Lady Pioneers lost both games of a doubleheader to Stillman (Ala.) College, first 4-3 before falling in five innings 8-0 in game two.
GAME ONE
Crowley's Ridge – 3
Stillman – 4
Despite leading for four and a half innings, Crowley's Ridge (4-9, 0-0 CAC) saw the hosting Lady Tigers (10-9, 0-0 SIAC) post a four-run fifth inning.
In the circle for Crowley's Ridge was Shelby Elrod (2-4) who punched out four Lady Tigers. The junior from Ballard County, Kentucky, also helped her cause with two hits in the leadoff spot.
The Lady 'Neers drew first blood in the top of the third inning when Maddie Reed had a one-out single to left field, eventually moving to second before being driven home by Dru Bryant's single to center. The inning would end on that same play when McKenzie Crofford was gunned down trying to reach third base from first.
The Lady Tigers would plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to back-to-back bases-loaded singles.
CRC fought back in the top of the sixth inning when Elrod collected a double, followed by her swiping third base. April Kennedy's sacrifice fly would bring home Elrod to narrow the Stillman lead. With Bryant on third, Rachel Russell's single closed the Tiger lead to one run, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
Bailey Jones made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning when her two-out single was followed by Elrod's second hit of the day to bring Jones's pinch-runner, Brooklyn Melson within 60 feet of tying the game, but the Tiger first basewoman made a great play to snag away a line drive to end the game.
Six Lady Pioneers had hits with Elrod's pair leading the way.
GAME TWO (5 inn.)
Crowley's Ridge – 0
Stillman – 8
A rough day ended prematurely after the Lady Pioneers (4-11, 0-0 CAC) saw the eighth Stillman Lady Tiger (11-11, 0-0 SIAC) run score with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Crowley's Ridge committed four fielding errors in game two, causing all but one of the Tiger runs to be unearned. Halea Wells (2-3) struck out three batters while walking four.
Kylie Cox and Bailey Jones were the lone girls in green to post hits in game two.
