SPRINGDALE, Ark. – Crowley's Ridge College visited Northwest Arkansas where they split Friday's twin bill with the Ecclesia (Ark.) Lady Royals. Pitcher Shelby Elrod hurled a career-high 10 punchouts in a game one victory 7-5. She followed that by leading off game two with her first career home run, but the Lady Pioneers ultimately fell short 7-3.
Game One
Crowley's Ridge – 7
Ecclesia – 5
Crowley's Ridge (8-19, 0-2 CAC) blasted off in the top of the first inning, plating six runs before the hosts picked up a bat. Elrod led off by legging out an infield single and stealing second base before a pair of groundouts saw the junior touch home for the first run. After Rachel Russell walked, the Lady Neers stacked up five consecutive base knocks starting with Layne Tedder's single before Kourtni Jagneaux singled home Russell. Maddie Reed answered with a single to load the bases followed by Bailey Jones driving in a pair on a double to deep center field. The hit parade concluded when Lacey Lambright-Southern's line drive into right saw Jones wrap around to score the sixth run of the inning.
Dru Bryant would score the Lady Pioneers' seventh run, taking advantage of an error, stolen base, and passed ball.
In the circle, Elrod (5-9) sat down a career-high on strikes, sending 10 Ecclesia Lady Royals (3-21) back to the bench empty. The hosts would give the girls in green a scare in the late innings, scoring a pair with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Ecclesia would then blast a three-run homer with two outs to close the gap, but a groundout ended matters with the Lady 'Neers on top 7-5.
Tedder was unflappable in the batter's box, going 4-for-5: including one double. Jagneaux and Jones were the top run producers, driving in two runs each. Lambright-Souther joined Jones with two hits each.
Game Two
Crowley's Ridge – 3
Ecclesia – 7
Game two was less kind to Crowley's Ridge (8-20, 0-2 CAC) with Ecclesia scoring three runs in the first inning to demoralize a strong start by the girls in Green. Shelby Elrod sent a 2-1 pitch howling over the left-field fence for her first career home run, but no other girls in green could get good contact in the bottom of the first.
Undeterred, Ecclesia (4-21) answered with a leadoff double en route to a three-run bottom of the first.
Trailing by four now, the Lady 'Neers would close the gap in the top of the fourth inning when April Kennedy led off the inning with a double which was answered by Rachel Russell's double to score her classmate. Running for Russell, Heather Conaway forced an errant throw on a failed pickoff attempt at third base and came home to score the Lady Pioneers' third run.
Ecclesia would add one in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game out of reach for CRC with a 7-3 final.
Abby Ewing (1-2) drew the start and was charged with the loss - pitching two innings.
Crowley's Ridge mustered five hits in the loss, with Elrod, Kennedy, and Russell joined by Kylie Cox and Jocelyn Villareal's base knocks.
