NEVADA, Mo. – Crowley's Ridge College competed on the first day of the Continental Athletic Conference round-robin, dropping both games on Friday first to Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.) University 12-3 before falling to hosting (RV) Cottey (Mo.) College in five innings 18-2.
Game One
Haskell – 12
Crowley's Ridge – 3
Despite scoring in the first inning, Crowley's Ridge (9-24, 0-3 CAC) hit a roadblock, only scoring a lone run in the fourth and seventh innings whereas the Haskell (4-23, 2-1 CAC) Fightin' Indians put up runs in bunches.
With two gone in the opening frame, Jocelyn Villareal continued her hot streak by lacing a two-bagger into right field. After Rachel Russell drew a walk, Layne Tedder drove in Villareal with a single into left field.
Shelby Elrod (6-11) put herself into a jam in the top of the second, with a wild pitch following base hits to set up runners at second and third with one out. Elrod would then punch out one batter before drawing a flyout to escape unscathed.
The Fightin' Indians would plate a pair of runs in both the top of the third and fourth to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
Bailey Jones and Lacey Lambright-Southern both took advantage of fielding miscues by HINU with Heather Conaway (Jones's courtesy runner) scoring on April Kennedy's sacrifice bunt.
A five-run sixth and three-run sixth put the Fightin' Indians ahead comfortably in the final frame, where Villareal posted her second double eventually to score off of the bat of Kylie Cox.
Cox, Kennedy, and Villareal each led CRC with a pair of base hits each. Crowley's Ridge was unable to capitalize on five Haskell errors, with all three Lady Pioneer runs being earned.
Game Two (5 inn.)
Crowley's Ridge – 2
(RV) Cottey – 18
Receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, Cottey (20-13, 5-0 CAC) put up massive numbers in the first three innings to take the wind out of the sails of Crowley's Ridge (9-25, 0-4 CAC).
A four-run bottom of the first was followed by an eight-run second. Bailey Jones tallied CRC's first hit with a one-out single in the top of the third. Two singles later off of the bats of Lacey Lambright-Southern and Shelby Elrod allowed April Kennedy to drive in Jones's courtesy runner, Brooklyn Melson, to score the first run for the Lady Pioneers.
Rachel Russell led off the top of the fourth with a double, and her pinch runner, Heather Conaway, scored after back-to-back errors from the Comets.
Abby Ewing (1-4) got the start for the Lady Pioneers, taking the loss.
Crowley's Ridge's four hits came off of four different bats, with Elrod, Jones, Lambright-Southern, and Russell being the only girls in green finding the hit column.
