Crowley's Ridge Mounts Comeback of the Semester
PENSACOLA, FL - The Lady Pioneers overcame several obstacles in their road win against the Lady Eagles of Pensacola Christian Saturday night, 59-54.
The game did not look bright for CRC in the beginning. The team had one of their poorest shooting stints, only converting on four free throws the entire first quarter. Pensacola built their largest lead of the game (17 points) with 16 seconds left to play in the first.
About half way through the second quarter, Crowley's Ridge put together an 8-0 run to cut the defecit to seven with the help of two three-point buckets by Chelsie Spence. With another three-point make by Kelcy Acklin, the Pioneers went into the locker room only down by five points.
The Lady Eagles would increase their lead back to twelve points late in the third quarter, but Elly Burrell hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to give CRC some momentum going into the last quarter.
The fourth was all Pioneers as they out-scored Pensacola 26-12 in the quarter. Starting at the 6:34 minute mark, Crowley's Ridge scored 10 unanswered points to move within one point. The ladies took their first lead of the game with 54 seconds left on a made free throw by Elly Burrell. Thanks to clutch free throw shooting by Bug Johnson, the Lady Pioneers kept the lead and finished the comeback win, 59-54.
Crowley's Ridge shot a season-low 13.3% (4/30) from deep, but made up for it by forcing 29 turnovers and shooting a season-high 77.8% (21/27) from the free throw line.
Pensacola Christian was led by Jessica Boyd with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Crowley's Ridge was led in scoring by Elly Burrell with 22 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Bug Johnson was the Lady Pioneer's second leading scorer with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
