Paragould, Ark.- The Lady Pioneers had their hands full this evening as they opened up their conference play for the season with a matchup against a stout #23 NAIA-ranked Lady Bobcats team who entered the Carter Activities Center with a record of 12-4 so far on the season.
Though the Lady Pioneers sat at an even record of 6-6 before the competition, they came into today's contest also earning national recognition as the team is ranked 10th in the NAIA in scoring by averaging 84.6 PPG. With a tough matchup in their conference kick-starter, the Lady Pioneers stretched their national ranking to the max but ultimately fell to the #23 Lady Bobcats by a gap of 16 points thanks to CofO's Sussana Moran who led the Bobcats with 32 points and 21 rebounds.
College of the Ozarks claimed a 4-point lead over the Pioneers after the first quarter and looked to take a double-digit lead into the half but with just under three minutes of play left before the break, Kiyuana Foster bucketed a quick layup after a drive to the hole which created a domino effect and turned into a 10-3 point Pioneer run. This boost cut the score back to a 4-point Bobcat lead, 40-36. With the momentum in full swing of the home team, CofO pulled one more trick out as they sank a buzzer-beater three allowing them to get one last jab in and take a 7-point lead into the break.
When the third quarter came and went, The Pioneers saw their defense hold the powerful Bobcat offense to 19- points, their lowest of the contest, but it wouldn't have much to offer in return as the Pioneer offense struggled and only mustered 13 points. CRC's best quarter of offense came in the final 10 minutes as they posted 25 points as a team but couldn't close the gap as the Bobcats stayed out of reach. CRC drops to (6-7) on the year and (0-1) in the conference.
Freshmen Ansley Dawson led the Pioneers in scoring for the third contest as she kept her streak of 20 points or more alive with her team-high 20 points and 4 rebounds. Like the last report, Sophomores Hunter Gibson and Reigiana Ward chased after with 17 points and 15 points while Ward added a team-high 8 rebounds. Lastly, Travia Woodruff ended the night with the most diverse stat sheet with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals.
