FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The first leg of a two-day trip to the Lone Star state featured the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers split the day with Dallas Christian (Texas) College with CRC taking the first game 10-5 before falling in the second 10-4.
GAME ONE
Crowley's Ridge - 10
Dallas Christian - 5
The Pioneers (10-11) drew first blood with a four-run second inning. Back-to-back singles from Austin Gross and Corbett Seib started the hitting for CRC in the inning. With Seib at third, Zorey Chipman at second, and Garett Wilson (courtesy running for Phoenix Beal) at first, senior Nate Finney hit a two-bagger into left field to clear the bases. An error in the outfield allowed Finney to wrap around and score to put his Pioneers up 4-0.
Nate Vasquez opened the home half of the second inning by reaching on a two-base error. Two plays later, DCC (4-26-1) answered with a run of their own.
After Beal reached base for his second walk, his runner Wilson promptly stole both second and third base to start off the top of the fourth. Noah Overshine would the single home the Pioneers' fifth run of the contest. Bobby Wright's second hit of the day then drove in Finney to push CRC ahead 6-1. Austin Gross continued to have the hot bat, driving in Noah Overshine and Wright with a one-out single to move ahead 8-1.
Trey Gosset got in on the hit parade with a single up the middle, later scoring off of a Crusader error in the sixth inning, followed by Finney's second double of the game setting Overshine up to sacrifice Brady Becerra home to head into the final inning up 10-1.
Dallas Christian would give Crowley's Ridge a scare in the home half of the seventh before a lineout closed the door on game one with a 10-1 win for the good guys.
Chipper Lamb picked up his first victory as a Pioneer, striking out two while the lone runner that crossed on his watch being unearned.
CRC saw the ball incredibly well, knocking out 12 hits with five players earning multiples. Finney, Gossett, Gross, Overshine, and Wright all ended their game with two hits each. Overshine drove in three runs while Finney's three placed him at the top of CRC's run production line for the season.
GAME TWO
Crowley's Ridge - 4
Dallas Christian -10
The Crusaders (5-27-1) came out firing on all cylinders to start the nightcap when Brandon Andrews sent a home run over the left field wall to give DCC a lead they would keep the entire game. The home team used their speed to score six runs off of four hits in the second frame to lead 7-0 after two.
The Pioneers (10-12) answered with a run of their own when Bobby Wright knocked his first career triple into right field to score Kole Simms. Wright himself would score thanks to Corbett Seib's team-leading fourth double of the year to cut into the DCC lead 7-2
Tacking on three more in the bottom of the fourth inning, Dallas Christian all but put the game out of reach. The Pioneers were; however, able to plate two runs sixth and a final one in the seventh, but the late scoring was not enough as CRC fell to Dallas Christian 10-5.
Aside from the first two innings pitched by DCC's Trevor Smith, each inning featured a new hurler on the bump and never allowed the Pioneers to get a feel for the zone. As a result, the Pioneers managed three hits: one each from Zorey Chipman, Seib, and Wright.
Kern Kline picked up the loss for CRC, exiting after facing 18 batters over 1.1 innings of work.
