Pioneers Fall In Four

Pioneers Fall In Four

Pioneers Fall In Four- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 9/30/22

The Lady Pioneers traveled to Memphis, TN yesterday to take on the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne Owen College. This would be the second matchup between the two teams as CRC hosted LOC earlier this season and took the match with a 3-1 victory. The end score would be the same, 3 sets to 1, but this time LeMoyne Owen would best the Pioneers. The set scores would go as follows: 20-25 LOC, 25-19 CRC, 14-25 LOC, and 18-25 LOC.

Set one CRC would find themselves in an uphill climb as they fell behind LeMoyne-Owen 6-13 early with the help of four consecutive kills by the Lady Magicians. Things would shift back to the Lady 'Neers when So. Jadyn Hesse would find the hardwood with a service ace. This would set up Junior Hannah Halverson to tie the set 15-15 with back to back kills. As soon as things seemed to shift, LOC took charge on the net, finishing the set with 15 kills allowing them to take set one 25-20.

Set two, LOC would see their lowest kill set of the contest thanks to the Pioneer defense. Early in the set, So. Paige Glenn and Jr. Booklynn Passmore  would meet the Magicians at the net and produce stout blocks for the Pioneers. Fr. Kinley Matlock would hold down the back row earning 23 digs on the night. Matlock would take her turn behind the service line and would find the gaps in the Magicians defense starting a rally with her service ace. Juniors Halverson, Elms, and Passmore would all have a turn producing a kill taking the lead 9-7. The Magicians wouldn't give up and would go on to  tie the game several more times  until CRC would go on a 6-1 run late to take the set with a 25-19 win.

Set three,  CRC would see its slowest start. LOC would come out of the gate with a 7-1 run before So. Paige Glenn would answer the Magicians with a kill. This would stun LOC but not stop them as they would continue to pound out a  match-high 18 kills against the Pioneers defense. So. Hesse and Jr. Halverson would assist Fr. Matlock in the Pioneer dig effort. All three would end with double digits in digs on the night.  Jr. Elms would find a couple of kills midway through but it would not be enough to spark the attack, CRC would fall in set three 14-25.

Going into the fourth set the Lady Pioneers again would fall behind early. The Lady Magicians skidded off to a 5-0 lead with two service aces that snuck through CRC's defense. The Pioneers would produce their best kill effort of the night with Jr. Elms leading the way with 4,  but LOC would muster 15 kills of their own. The attack would be too heavy, CRC would fall 18-25 in set 4.

Leaders:

Jr. Elms led the Pioneers in kills (7), So. Hesse led the Pioneers in assists (11), Three Pioneers had double digits in digs with Fr. Matlock leading the way (23), So. Hesse (14), Jr. Halverson (12).

So. Hesse ended with a double double in the effort.
