Volleyball Wraps Up Opening Weekend- Wil Teague, Sports Information Director, 8/30/25
Pioneer Volleyball concluded its opening weekend at the Freed-Hardeman University Labor Day Classic still in search of the season's first win as the Pioneers were bested in games three and four, falling in four sets to both Fisk University and Michigan-Dearborn earlier this afternoon. The Pioneers fall to (0-4) on the year.
Game 1:
Henderson, TN- The Lady Pioneers fell first to the Fisk Bulldogs in today's matchups seeing defeat after four sets of action. The Bulldogs won the first, third, and fourth frames of the contest, with the Pioneers pulling out the 25-22 set two win, credited to a matchup-best 13 kills from the Pioneers. Despite dropping the game, the Lady Pioneers' offense saw growth as it posted double-digit kills in three of four sets for the first time this season.
Brooklyn Cross led the team with a season high 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Jillian Glasgow recorded the team's first double-double of the year, with the Junior dishing out 17 assists and recording 16 digs. Sophomore Maddie Burris added 11 assists and 9 digs for the Pioneers, and Junior Shania Hodges led the team in blocks with 4.
Game 2:
Henderson, TN- For the second time this season, the Lady Pioneers started out on the right note, claiming the opening frame of the matchup, but again would struggle to maintain control of the game, allowing Michigan-Dearborn to sweep the next three sets. In the opening set, the victor was determined late via key service chances, with Jillian Glasgow finding no-mans-land from behind the line before serving up a final kill to Amiyah Saxton for the 25-23 set win. Woefully, from here on out, Michigan-Dearborn controlled the contest, hammering out double-digit kill efforts over the next three sets while limiting the Pioneers to single-digit performances.
Amiyah Saxton led the offense with 8 kills. Jillian Glasgow added team highs in digs with 8 and assists with 13. Alyssa Dirden matched Glasgow with 8 digs, and Brooklyn Cross totaled 3 blocks in the setback game.
Up Next: The Lady Pioneers take a few days off for the Labor Day weekend before hitting the court again on the road on Wednesday, September 3rd, against Avila and MidAmerica Nazarene. #GOPIONEERS
